What is Premature Ejaculation?

Premature ejaculation (also known as rapid ejaculation, rapid climax, premature climax, or early ejaculation) is when a man has an orgasm either before or shortly after sexual penetration, with minimal sexual stimulation, and sooner than he or his partner wishes due to a lack of voluntary control over ejaculation.

Types of PE

The literature commonly describes PE as an ejaculation that occurs within two minutes of penetration, however, when determining just how prevalent PE is, there are several variables that must be taken into account, including how long it takes to ejaculate and how long both partners want sex to last. —estimates range from as low as 5% to as high as 30% .

In general, there are two types of premature ejaculation: Primary PE, which is present from the beginning of puberty. And secondary PE, which is acquired later during one’s lifetime

Premature ejaculation may result in an unsatisfactory sexual experience for both partners. This can increase the anxiety that may contribute to the problem.

Premature ejaculation is one of the most common forms of male sexual dysfunction: In the United States, one out of every five men, between 18 and 59 years of age, suffers from premature ejaculation.

Causes, Incidents & Risk Factors

Although many men feel embarrassed to talk about it, premature ejaculation is a common and treatable condition.

While psychological and biological factors can play a role, the exact cause of premature ejaculation is still a mystery to the medical world. Studies show that a lack of serotonin, which is a neurotransmitter in the brain, might be one cause of premature ejaculation. Psychological factors including temporary depression, stress, unrealistic expectations about performance, a history of sexual repression, or an overall lack of confidence can all result in premature ejaculation.

PE can also be caused by a lack of communication between partners, hurt feelings, or unresolved conflicts that interfere with the ability to achieve emotional intimacy.

Erectile dysfunction itself can be another cause for premature ejaculation. Concerns regarding achieving and maintaining an erection during sexual performance can lead to the formation of a rush ejaculation pattern and eventually to premature ejaculation.

Finally, hormonal and chemical imbalance in the male body can be a cause of premature ejaculation by altering the ejaculatory reflex mechanism.

Symptoms

The main sign of premature ejaculation is when the man ejaculates before he or his partner would like (prematurely). This may range from before penetration to a point just after penetration. While occasional premature ejaculation is a common phenomenon occurring during intercourse or masturbation with almost every man, a more frequent (constant) involuntary early climax (commonly accompanied with personal and partner dissatisfaction) points toward real premature ejaculation.

Signs & Tests

Premature ejaculation is usually not accompanied with abnormal findings. The diagnosis of premature ejaculation is made during a personal interview with a physician specialized in male sexual medicine.

Treatments

Treatment options for premature ejaculation include sexual therapy, medications, psychotherapy, and natural supplements.

In order to choose the right method of therapy, it is important to consider the severity of experienced premature ejaculation. Medication should only be used in severe cases (with a time to ejaculation of 1-1.5 minutes or less). For less severe cases, alternative treatments with high satisfaction and low side effect rates are the better choice.

Medications

Certain antidepressants and topical anesthetic creams are used to treat premature ejaculation. Although none of these drugs is specifically approved by the Food and Drug Administration to treat premature ejaculation, some are used for this purpose.

When seeking these treatment options, it is important to determine their actual need, as well as their unique benefits and potential side effects.

Alternative, Natural Remedies

Sexual health problems of our generation, such as premature ejaculation, have an ancient root; so do many of their treatment options practiced over the last few centuries.

Our ancestors have used natural ingredients and herbs with high success rates to treat premature ejaculation. New technologies have provided easier access to those natural sources of healing which, if used appropriately, will deliver great relief.

When selecting a natural supplement for the treatment of premature ejaculation, it is crucial to pay close attention to the composition of the ingredients, their dosage, and their purity.

Sexual and Behavioral Therapy

In some cases, simple steps such as masturbating before intercourse, relaxation, or techniques, such as “stop and start” or the “squeeze technique,” may help prolong the time until ejaculation.

Expectations (Prognosis)

In most cases, the man is able to learn how to control ejaculation through education and by practicing the simple techniques outlined. Chronic premature ejaculation may be a sign of anxiety or depression. A psychiatrist or psychologist can help treat these conditions.

Complications

If a man ejaculates very early, before entering the vagina, it may prevent a couple from getting pregnant.

A continued lack of control over ejaculation may cause one or both partners to feel sexually dissatisfied. It may lead to sexual tension or other problems in the relationship.

Calling Your Health Care Provider

Call for an appointment with your health care provider if you are having a problem with premature ejaculation and it does not get better using the methods described above.

Prevention

There is no way to prevent this disorder. However, relaxation can make it less likely to occur.
